Headshots with your iPhone

We live in such a unique time with having a camera in our hands at all times. But how do we use it to the fullest potential to make a professional headshot happen? We're here to help!

First it's important to define what a headshot is. A headshot is not a full body photo. It is usually of the upper half of your body, usually from your shoulders up. You'll want a close crop to highlight your beautiful face - not whatever is in the background behind or around you.

Speaking of what is behind you - choose a background that is all in even light with minimal distractions. Ideally that would be full shade but if you're in full sun, that can work. too. You just don't want any shadows across your face or in the background. A plain colored wall, brick wall or in a field are all great options for backgrounds.

Now that we know what type of photo we're after, how can you look your best? You'll want to wear a simple shirt with no words, logos or distraction designs. A sweater, collared shirt or basic, solid colored shirt will be great. You also want to keep jewelry to a minimum. Simple earrings or a necklace are great.

What you don't want to wear? A hat! We want (and need) to see your face! If you're wearing a hat, there will likely be a shadow on your face that will hide your eyes.

Use natural light. What is natural light? The sun, outside! If you can taking your photos outside will be to your advantage. It creates a more even light that is less likely to create shadows or create a yellow appearance to the photos that can come from indoor fluorescent lights.

In a perfect world you'll have your friend, or someone else, take the photo - this helps level up your photo from what a selfie would be. Ask your photographer to take several photos. The beauty of the digital age is being able to see and approve the photos immediately. Give yourself some options to choose from.

Now that you've got your awesome iPhone headshot, we recommend you rename the file so we can find it after we download it. Once your photo file is on your computer (you can email it, use AirDrop if you're using Apple products, or use Google Drive or any number of file sharing apps) rename the file by right clicking the image and click 'rename'. Save it as your name so if it gets misplaced on our end in the digital space, we'll know who it belongs to!

Beyond that my biggest piece of advice for creating a great iPhone headshot is to practice, have a trial run, and be patient. Take more than one photo and HAVE FUN!
